チュニジア南部に先住民ベルベル人の古い村が残っている。住民のほとんどが新村に移り住み、村に残っているのは2家族のみ。そのうち1家族は姉妹だ。姉は毎日燃料のために山から枯れ木を集めたり、井戸から水を汲んできたりする。妹は飼っているヒツジとヤギの放牧に出かける。
Suad and Salma live in the ruined Berber village in southern Tunisia. Their house is troglodyte dug in the hillside attached with fortified granary.
In previous times about 3500 people were living in this old village living on their hump, traveled to Lybia by donkey to sell olive oil contained in Gerba, made by goat skin.
Now most of them avandoned their houses and moved to the modern village of the same name to live in the concrete house with electricity and running water.
その昔、村の住居は小高い丘の中腹に建てられた。敵の襲撃をいち早く見つけるためだ。最盛期には約3500人が住み、自給自足の生活を送っていた。当時の主な生産物はオリーブオイル。それをヤギの皮でできた「ゲルバ」という袋に入れ、ロバに積んでリビアまで売りに行った。
